Recently I was interacting with a person whom I know for many years now, on the subject of giving. This is what she personally believes and does – “I give my first fruit of my labour to…God…. When I got my job, I [gave my first salary] entirely…to the service of God.” She still practices this principle. That is no ordinary thing to do.
Giving, firstly is a godly quality. It is God’s nature to give and forgive. As for man, he is eager to receive, in many cases “take it” by at means. It requires a GREAT heart to give.
Giving is never measured in the size of the gift, but rather in the size of the heart. The motives, intentions and the reasons count more than anything.
This is what the LORD Jesus spoke about giving in Luke 21:1-4 – ‘1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. 3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: 4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”
Giving is a spiritual principle, where the one who receives, and the one who gives, are both blessed…it will always be a blessing to the one who gives. This is what the Word of God affirms in Acts 20:35 – “35 I have shown you in every way, by labouring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” What a powerful lesson for us!!! Isn’t it?
Let us learn to give with a clean heart, as an act of worship to the LORD who is the Giver of all good things that we possess and enjoy. Let us give, desiring to help those in need, by being a blessing to them in their need.
"The most obvious lesson in Christ's teaching is that there is no happiness in having or getting anything, but only in giving."
