The Bible records that both Zacharias and Elizabeth were righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the ways of the LORD. Yet, the next verse records they were childless, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were very old.
“5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.” – Luke 1:5-7
How should we understand this painful paradox? The best way to respond to such painful situations is to respond as did Zacharias and Elizabeth. They did not question God, but simply took it in their stride. They sure must have prayed for children, but they were never turned bitter. Despite their pain and ‘shame,’ they faithfully continued their walk with LORD, and served Him faithfully and obediently. Praise be to the LORD!
What if they never had a child? I am sure, they would still be faithful and obedient to the LORD. The reason – their obedience was not transactional, and never subjected it conditionally to natural, and material blessings and benefits. They were spiritually mature and knew who their God was. Glory be to the LORD!
May the LORD help us to serve Him faithfully and obediently, like Zacharias and Elizabeth. Can we?
