One of most familiar Christmas passages is the one about angel Gabriel visiting Mary found in Like 1:26 following. It speaks a lot about this young lady who was chosen to be the ‘mother’ of the Saviour.
The angel of the LORD said – “28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” – Luke 1:28.
The response of Mary is intelligent, wise and worth noting. She asks her first and only question in Luke 1:34 ’34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” This speaks of her knowledge and her intelligence.
When the angel Gabriel responds, “37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.” [Luke 1:37,] then Mary says…“38…“Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word…” – Luke 1:38.
The words of Mary, at both times, speaks of her intelligence, wisdom, presence of mind, alert and sharp observation, analysis. She surely is no ordinary young lady. Her conclusion in Luke 1:38, sums up her desire to serve God as her LORD and her Saviour. We should be cautious not to erroneously put her on a pedestal, equal with God Himself. Rather, she is just as in need of a Saviour, as any of us – Romans 3:23. Mary herself would advise us so.
May the LORD raise up many more such wise and worthy women, who would willing want to serve the LORD God Almighty, in whatever capacity He would want of us, like Mary.
"...Mary agreed to receive a pregnancy that would be seen as suspicious, and this in a culture that had a potential death penalty for adultery. Mary identified herself with sinners so that the purpose of God would be fulfilled."
