David comes across as a strong and brave man, and he is one, undoubtedly. However, many of the Psalms that he wrote, give us a deep insight into his heart and his mind. Here in Psalm 86, which is simply called “A Prayer of David” we see the frailty of this mighty man of valour, and the his personal limitedness in this prayer. It also speaks about his dependence on the YAHWEH, his LORD and his Master. David is a man like any of us.
It is obvious from Psalm 86:1-3, that David was praying to Adonai, his Master, at a time when he was in deep trouble. We don’t know the exact situation, but he surely was in desperate need for God’s help and protection – “1 Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. 3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.”
Can we see ourselves in the words of David? Does it not help us to know that David always depended on God…more so when facing a tough and troublesome time? Remember David’s words to Goliath? David always leaned on his God. May we also, like David, run to God at all times, more so, in times of need and trouble. May the LORD help us to lean on Him at all times.
"When our prayers are lowly by reason of our humility, or feeble by reason of our sickness, or without wing by reason of our despondency, the Lord will bow down to them, the infinitely exalted Jehovah will have respect unto them."
