The LORD Jesus, speaking about the way that He wants us to walk, as His disciples and Christians, says – “14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” – Matthew 7:14. While on the ‘Narrow Way’ life can turn upside down at a moment’s notice. Such is the life that we are called to.
To bring this to the fore, the hymn writer, Johnson Oatman Jr. wrote the hymn, “Count Your Blessings” in 1897. The last stanza is of particular interest for our meditation today. It speaks about holding on to Jesus, and our faith in Him, despite all the conflict that surrounds us…big or small, by counting our blessings, one by one, which our LORD had done in our lives. It hits the nail on its head, and gives us the right perspective, and proper attitude, for our journey on the narrow way.
“So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.”
David of old, has the same to say to us, through his personal experience in 1 Samuel 30:6 – “6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.” BUT DAVID STRENGTHENED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD.
Therefore, let us too, learn to strengthen ourselves in the LORD our God, by counting our blessings, and naming them one by one, in the midst of all our conflicts, both big or small. The LORD who has called us out of darkness into His marvellous light, will lead us and guide us to fulfill all the purposes that He intends to get done through us. So, let us hold on to the LORD, and continue to walk the narrow way.
"In the infinite wisdom of the Lord of all the earth, each event falls with exact precision into its proper place in the unfolding of His divine plan. Nothing, however small, however strange, occurs without His ordering or without its particular fitness for its place in the working out of His purpose; and the end of all shall be the manifestation of His glory, and the accumulation of His praise."
