Advent, as it progresses, and we fast approach Christmas, let us take stock of our lives, and with what we are building it. Each of us, while growing up as a Christian, learn certain principles, on which we base and build our Christian life. It is no so much what others have taught us, but more so, to what we are drawn to, and adapt and integrate them in our lives, and our living. Fundamentally, there only are two possible primary positions – TRUTH and LIES. These two primary positions form the basis for our growth, our development, and the direction in which we travel.
The LORD Jesus says – “…I am the truth….” – John 14:6. On the other hand, Lucifer is “the father of lies.” – John 8:44.
When truth, honesty and transparency become the bedrock of one’s thoughts, words and deeds, then our lives will blossom into fullness, as intended by God. If we don’t make truth, honesty and transparency, the bedrock on which we build our lives, then we become nothing but a farce. Everything we think, speak and do will be lies, in various hues and shades, because we have chosen to build our lives on lies and deception. The lies and deception, firstly, and most certainly, will defeat and destroy us. Our lies filled lives, may or may not destroy others, who are dependent on us.
The LORD, in His eternal and unfathomable wisdom, has commanded us – “Thou shalt not lie.” – Exodus 20:16. There are no ifs and buts there. There is no room for error in its understanding. There is no scope to wiggle around, with our justifications, nor re-interpret the truth, with our mental gymnastics. It will be nothing more than, deceiving ourselves, if we try to selectively apply what the LORD’s command.
What a pitiable situation man is in today. When we look around, we see, as human beings, we have convinced ourselves to comfortably lie. We seem to do so with pride, thinking we are smart and intelligent. Have we forgotten, “What we sow that we reap.” – Galatians 6:7-8.
The Bible says, “20 Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their ways are His delight.” “22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.” “16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” – Proverbs 11:20; 12:22; 6:16-19.
This is what we can deduct from what the Word of God is asking from us. It is more honourable to speak the truth, and pay the price, than speak a lie, and make a fortune. There is no comparison between the two. Truth will always pay us well. Lies will always destroy us. It is a simple equation.
"Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it."
