The LORD God Almighty, our His goodness, grace and mercy had…
1- …called us out of darkness into His marvellous light to proclaim His praises – 1 Peter 2:9-10.
2- …called us to be His ambassadors – 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.
3- …called us to be His gospel bearers and preachers of the good news – Matthew 28:18-20.
4- …called us to be the salt and light – Matthew 5:13-16.
5- …called us to walk in obedience and faith in the narrow way – *”6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”* – Colossians 2:6.
The Christians and the Church had been found wanting on many fronts. We have been a bad witness to our LORD. Many have gone out, and have done the exact opposite of what the LORD had called us to be. Some have used and misused the Bible, to justify their evil intentions and desires. Many have used God, to support their greedy and sinful enterprises.
What happened in Hispaniola, the most populous island in the Caribbean on 21 December, 1511 AD, is an indicator of the ills that plague the Christians, and the Church. Preacher Antonio des Montesinos, Dominican Friar, working as a missionary, stands against the conquistador [Spanish conquerors or colonisers] belief that – “Gunpowder against Indians is incense to the Lord” – with a fiery sermon, denouncing Spain’s atrocities in the new world. Praise God for this missionary who had the courage to speak for the LORD.
Antonio des Montesinos, had the courage and the conviction to stand up, and speak up, about the wrongs, and the ills, committed. To be the ambassador of God, to be His representatives, to be the salt and light, is to stick out our necks for God. To call a wrong as a wrong – by “15…speaking the truth in love…” – Ephesians 4:15a. May the LORD help us to be truly His salt and His light.
"We do not want a church that will move with the world. We want a church that will move the world."
