Life is nothing but a collection of simple and small things. It is these simple and small things, that matter the most, and not some big, grand and great things. Strangely, people look for and run after great and grand things, thinking life is all about great things.
The LORD Jesus, our Creator, our Redeemer and our Master has these words for us – “Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” – Luke 2:15.
Commenting on Luke 2:15, Ellicott’s Commentary says…
– “Our Lord’s words show that He had read the secret of the man’s heart. Greed was there, with all its subtle temptations, leading the man to think that “life” was not worth living unless he had a superfluity of goods.”
Pulpit Commentary emphasises on these words, about Luke 2:15…
– “The Master’s own life, landless, homeless, penniless, illustrated nobly these words. That life, as far as earth was concerned, was his deliberate choice. The world, Christian as well as pagan, in each succeeding age, with a remarkable agreement, utterly declines to recognize the great Teacher’s view of life here.”
The Word of God warns us to be on guard, when it says…
– “6 But godliness with contentment is great gain…8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content…10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:6,8,10
How are we viewing life, living and our lifestyle, here on this earth? What are we running after? Are we running after the things of the world? Are we hoarding in greed, the things of this world? Are we running after the LORD, His righteousness and His kingdom? No one knows it better than us. May the LORD help us to run after Him and Him alone.
"As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness -- just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breath it; just warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day; and a cool breeze when the day is warm."
