“Nice guys finish last” is an old English proverb. It hasn’t come about accidentally nor unintentionally. Good people will always end up last, in this world. Good people will always “lose” in this world. *The reasoning behind such a proverb is that, because good people stand for right, and conduct their lives, and their struggles, on principles, values and ethics, they will end up in the “losing” side…or will end up last.*
Keld Jensen, a negotiation strategist and speaker, says…
– “Good guys finish last is an old English proverb; basically it means that people who uphold ethical and moral virtues tend to lose out. If I believe that I only have two options: to win by doing whatever is necessary even though it may be unethical, or to keep to ethics and lose – I am placed in a real moral dilemma.”
How true it is, isn’t it? At such a critical juncture, our integrity is put to the severest of test. What we choose in such a situation, will demonstrate to us, who we actually are. The rest is all a facade, and a pretention, deceiving ourselves, and trying to deceive all around us.
The worst kind of logic and reasoning is, “we are good people, but to achieve our good goals, we have to do bad things.” The logic employed is, “the ends justifying the means.” One can use any means to achieve the “noble” ends. One such proverb is, “Everything is fair in love and war.” What a pity. What a tragedy.
The Bible talks about many great men, who stood for what is right, without compromising their principles, values and ethics. Not an easy proposition. It doesn’t come in one day. However, unless we passionately and doggedly want to pursue the path of righteousness, we cannot, and will not, walk the path of righteousness.
– Prophets of old, stood for truth, justice and righteousness – but most of them were murdered, by the very people, for whom they were the prophets of God. All of them lived in humble and poor setup.
– The New Testament also throws individuals. John the Baptist, Stephen, the apostles – all became the martyrs of the early church…and the list goes on.
The greatest in the list is our LORD Jesus Christ Himself. From an earthy point of view, Jesus lost. In fact what happened on the cross of Calvary is a gross violation of all principles of justice, and a blatant display of, how things work, in the fallen world. The judge declares that he finds no fault with Jesus, yet he bows to the external pressures, and pronounces a verdict, which is an utter miscarriage of justice.
The LORD, through Paul, encourages the young Timothy, and to us, even today, to stand for what the Bible stands for, through these words…
– “12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of…” – 2 Timothy 3:12-14
Good people will always “lose” in this world. The evil, wicked and the unjust will “win,” always. This has been the norm, and this will be the norm. We should be prepared for it. Any sense of justice that may prevail, is an aberration, and not the norm.
HalleluYah!!! Thanks be to the LORD, the story doesn’t end there. Every injustice will be brought to light, by the LORD God Almighty, but we have to wait. In the meantime, we have to keep on standing for truth, justice, equality and righteousness…even if we lose, even if we are defeated…we have to wait patiently for that day…the day of ultimate redemption.
"Christianity is presented in many different ways these days, but the challenge we face is to make sure we follow Jesus Christ according to His teachings in the Bible and not according to ideas and theories that result in an “easy-believe-ism” society. When Jesus was on earth He taught that those who follow Him must take up the cross:""
