We are commanded to speak the truth, by the LORD our God. The Bible also asks us to speak the truth with love, care and concern, so that, when we speak the truth, we do not come out as rude, harsh or arrogant while speaking.
– “16 Thou shalt not bear false witness [lie] against thy neighbour.” – Exodus 20:16
– “15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—” – Ephesians 4:15
Not to lie, is clear to grasp and follow. However, “speaking the truth in love” is not as simple as it sounds. Many times, when standing for the truth, one tends to take a position, that may pushing us into being proud and arrogant – in the sense of being “holier than thou” attitude. The remedy for such a sickness is found in the words of Paul to the Ephesian Christians…
– “25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour,” for we are members of one another…29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:25,29.
The reason the LORD encourages us to speak the truth, but in love, is because of what it does. When we speak in love, we speak the truth without burning the other person. The wise book of Proverbs of the Bible, has this insight to add, for our benefit…
– “1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
However, being soft is not the same as being weak. To speak softly is to speak gently, with care and concern, without compromising on the content, and the character, of the truth, being spoken.
May the LORD help us, to always remember what pleases the LORD, and implicitly obey, whatever He commands us…
– “22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” – Proverbs 12:22
Even so, the LORD help us to speak the truth always, and speak it in love and gentleness.
"Truth is the element in which we are to live, move, and have our being; fidelity to truth is the backbone of the Christian ministry. But truth must be inseparably married to love; good tidings spoken harshly are no good tidings; the charm of the message is destroyed by the discordant spirit of the messenger."
