The Christmas narrative, found in the Gospel of Luke, is very interesting and empowering to all, who are burdened with loads of care and concerns. Elizabeth and Mary have so much to tell us, about life with God, and facing impossible situations.
Zacharias and Elizabeth were old, and were beyond the age of having any children. It was an absolutely impossible situation, humanly speaking. Mary was a young woman, engaged to Joseph, yet found pregnant without the intervention of a man. It was an absolutely impossible situation, humanly speaking. Yet we see, both these impossible situations happening. One was a joyous situation, while the case of Mary was a path filled with thorns.
Both the old couple, and the young Mary, took God at His word, and trusted Him. Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist, who became the forerunner to the Saviour. Mary gave birth to Jesus, the One who came to save His people from their sins.
Zacharias, Elizabeth and Mary believed God, and placed, all their doubts and unbelief, at the feet of God Almighty, and stepped ahead in faith.
– “38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word…” – Luke 1:38
They did so because, they knew who their God was. They knew that, the God of the Bible, is the God of impossibilities.
– “37 For with God nothing will be impossible.” – Luke 1:37
– “27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” – Mark 10:27
What is our story? What ‘trouble’ is brewing in our lives? What is God asking of us? What are we saying in response to our impossible situations? Do we want to trust God? Or do we want to trust our own abilities? The Good Old Book encourages us to trust God at all times.
– “5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.” – Proverbs 3:5-8
– “8 It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in princes.” – Psalms 118:8-9
May the LORD help us to choose wisely, whom to trust, and in whom to place our faith. Any given day, it is better to trust God, and walk in His ways. Let us walk as did Zacharias, Elizabeth and Mary. Even so the LORD help us.
"This trust is not the mere cold assent of enlightened judgment. It is trust…with all your heart. It is a childlike, unwavering confidence in our Father’s well-proved wisdom, faithfulness, and love."
