The Bible tells us clearly that, God has called us all, out of darkness and sin, who were in the highway to hell, into His marvellous light.
– “9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” – 1 Peter 2:9
The purpose for which, the LORD had called us all, out of darkness, into His marvellous light, is so that, we proclaim God praises, through our words and deeds. This should be the priority of our lives…of all who are redeemed, by the LORD Jesus Christ.
George Whitefield, the famed English revivalist, on 30 December 1741 wrote in a letter: “O how little do I for Jesus, who has done so much for me!” Encyclopaedia Britannica records this about Whitefield.
– “George Whitefield (born December 27 1714, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England—died September 30, 1770, Newburyport, Massachusetts [U.S.]) was a Church of England evangelist who, by his popular preaching, stimulated the 18th-century Protestant revival throughout Britain and in the British American colonies.”
Josephine Butler (1828-1906), was shattered and broken-hearted, when she witnessed the accidental death of her beloved daughter, when she drowned to her death, right in front of her eyes. Yet, Josephine, did not let it demoralise her, rather, sought the LORD for help and comfort, and set out determinedly, to seek for a task, that could make her life meaningful, and not wallow in her pain and anguish. She chose to assisting those even more broken-hearted than herself. As a result of her pursuit, she took upon the work of helping the poor and downtrodden women. She championed the cause of such neglected women, and brought much needed help, and the light of gospel, to the prostitutes. Today happens to be the day she died in 1996.
Mary Hartmann, is another shining example of a Christian, who did something worthwhile with her life, when her world came crumbling down. Mary, was the wife of Johann Gottlieb Hartmann. Both of them were Moravian missionaries working in Surinam, since 1823. When her husband died in 1844, Mary continued the work till her death on 30 December 1853. She worked tirelessly, in the face of sickness and dangers all around, while she herself suffering from elephantiasis – all for the love of the LORD, and the love for the people.
What about us? What is it that is burning us to live? What drives us from one day to the next…one year to the next? We who are called by God, out of darkness, into His marvellous light – what are we living for? What is “THE PRIORITY IN OUR LIFE?” May the LORD help us to take, an honest review of our lives. Even so the LORD help us.
"For He has, in the last resort, nothing to give us but Himself; and He can give that only insofar as our self-affirming will retires and makes room for Him in our souls. Let us make up our minds to it; there will be nothing “of our own” left over to live on, no “ordinary” life."
