Concern about future is one of the primary causes for anxiety and stress. There is nothing wrong to be concerned about the future. It is both natural and normal to think so. All of us think about the future, and wonder, how it would go for us.
Paul the apostle, writing to the young Church at Philippi, has these words of insight for their encouragement and balanced approach towards all their concerns about the future, and its needs.
– “19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
The broader context of Philippians 4:19 is that, the Christians at Philippi, though poor, have sacrificially given to the needs and the necessities of the apostle Paul. Paul, speaking highly of their kindness and generosity, draws their attention to God, who is our Provider. The idea that we need to gather is that, of the miracle which prophet Elisha did in 2 Kings 4:1-7, where the oil from the old widow’s vessels did not stop filling untill all her needs were met.
We ought to learn to be faithful and generous, in what little we have, and make it an offering to the LORD, as His faithful and obedient servant. The LORD in His grace and mercy, will take care of all our needs. The One about whom the Bible talks about is faithful. He will take care of all our needs and the future. The idea is the same as what David writes in Psalm 23.
– “1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” – Psalm 23:1-3
May we trust God always, and be faithful in helping the needs of God’s kingdom and His children. Even so the LORD help us.
"For David, the fact of God’s shepherd-like care was the end of dissatisfied need. He said, “I shall not want” both as a declaration and as a decision. i. “I shall not want” means, “All my needs are supplied by the LORD, my shepherd.” ii. “I shall not want” means, “I decide to not desire more than what the LORD, my shepherd gives."
