The Word of God is a treasure trove of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, insight, encouragement, inspiration, strength, courage, faith, empowerment and enlightenment. Oh, how sweet, soothing and satisfying, is the Word of God, unto a hungry soul!!! That is why David says…
– “7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;” – Psalm 19:7-8
How true are the words of David, describing and defining, the Bible, which is more specifically, “LOGOS – GOD’S WRITTEN WORD!” Let us read a few views about the Bible by some faithful disciples of the LORD.
– “The Bible is shallow enough for a child not to drown, yet deep enough for an elephant to swim.” – Saint Augustine
– “Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years.” – Charles Spurgeon
– “The most foolish person in the world is the one who has the opportunity to read, absorb, digest, live in, be immersed in worship-reading the Bible, but doesn’t do it because of PREOCCUPATION with other things of this world.” – Rex B. Andrews
Here are a few verses the Bible, for us to contemplate on its worth, for us, as Christians.
– “72 The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.” – Psalm 119:72
– “9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.” – Psalm 19:9-11
– “97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. 102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:97-105
– “137 Righteous are You, O LORD, And upright are Your judgments. 138 Your testimonies, which You have commanded, Are righteous and very faithful…140 Your word is very pure; Therefore Your servant loves it.” – Psalm 119:137-138,140
– “…my heart stands in awe of Your word. 162 I rejoice at Your word As one who finds great treasure. 163…I love Your law. 164 Seven times a day I praise You, Because of Your righteous judgments. 165 Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble…167 My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly.” – Psalm 119:171-165,167
It is imperative for us as Christians to study the Word of God. It helps us stay steady, focused and secure in a world that wishes to sift and subjugate us. When we read the Bible, we will know our God. When we know who our God is, it become easy for us to walk His path, and become like Him, which is the purpose of our transformation.
– “We must make a study of our God: what He loves, what He hates, how He speaks and acts. We cannot imitate a God whose features and habits we have never learned. We must make a study of Him if we want to become like Him. We must seek His face.” – Jen Wilkin
A word for the busy Christian, seeking eagerly to live and serve the LORD God Almighty, as a faithful and obedient servant.
– “Nothing is more needed among preachers today than that we should have the courage to shake ourselves free from the thousand and one trivialities in which we are asked to waste our time and strength, and resolutely return to the apostolic ideal which made necessary the office of the pastorate. (We must resolve that) we will continue steadfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the Word.” – G. Campbell Morgan
Have we read our Bibles this morning? What have we learnt from the Bible this morning? What did the LORD speak to us through His Word?
"God wants to communicate with you in the 21st century. He wrote His message in a book. He asks you to come and study that book for three compelling reasons: it is essential for growth. it is essential for maturity. it is essential for equipping you, training you, so that you might be an available, clean, sharp instrument in His hands to accomplish His purposes. So the real question confronting you now is: How can you afford not to be in God’s Word?"
