All of us pray to the LORD everyday. We have all kinds of requests, as part of our prayers. Nothing wrong about it. It is good that we pray. It speaks of our dependency on God as our Provider.
What we pray for, reveals a lot about our needs, our concerns, and that which has the attention of our heart and mind. It reveals about our priorities. What is our prayer this morning? What are the things that we are praying for?
David, always prayed to the LORD. He had one consistent prayer, which he prayers earnestly and sincerely. David always sought the LORD to make him someone, who would walk faithfully and obediently, in the ways of the LORD, all the days of his life. What heart would pray for such a thing? Let us read a few prayers of David, to see what and why he prayed so.
– “11 Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. 12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore.” – Psalm 86:11-12
– “4 Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” – Psalm 25:4-5
– “7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. 8 When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, LORD, I will seek.” 9 Do not hide Your face from me; Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10 When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me.” – Psalm 27:7-10
– “7 Answer me speedily, O LORD; My spirit fails! Do not hide Your face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the pit. 8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.” – Psalm 143:7
David always prayed, that his LORD would teach him the eternal ways of God. This was at the core of who he is; what he desired and therefore, prayed for, more than anything else. David desired God and God’s glory, above everything else. Even when David was in tough and painful situation, he always sought to know God and His ways. This is what made David, the person who he is.
All what we pray for, is not very important for us, as a Christian, even though it is good, and nothing wrong with it. What is significantly important, and essential, for our walk on the narrow path is, “What is the core of our Christian walk, and what is at the core of all our prayers.” They both are inseparably connected, and reflect the quality of our faith and our walk.
Let us therefore, desire with all our heart, and pray with all our strength, to know God and His ways; and walk in His ways, all the days of our lives. Let us pray like David, that the LORD would be compelled to answer our prayers, as He answered David. Let us pray that, God would teach us His ways, and help us walk in His ways, all the days of our lives. Even so the LORD help us.
"Most of us, when we pray, are concerned about deliverance and help and guidance and such things. But we are not nearly as concerned to be taught God’s way and to be helped to serve him with an undivided heart."
