One of the well-known Scripture portions is Psalm 91. It would not be a surprise, if this Psalm would be one of the most read Psalms by Christians. Most Christians must have read it at least once, if not more. What an amazing Psalm is Psalm 91. New King James Version titles this Psalm as “Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God.”
My personal opinion and conclusion is that, this Psalm lets us know, more about God’s love, and His heart, towards us, than about we loving, trusting and obeying God. Each and every verse, of these sixteen verses are, so full of love of God towards all, who seek Him, set their hearts upon Him, and look for His mighty arm to stand by them, and keep them safe through thick and thin of life. Oh, the grandeur of poetry, and the flowing streams of comfort and courage, speaks volumes about God, His love for all, who know His name, and depend upon Him.
Here under are a few thoughts from great servants of God, on this amazing Psalm, the Psalm 91. Their observations help and enlighten us, about God.
– “This psalm is one of the greatest possessions of the saints.” – G. Campbell Morgan
– ‘In the whole collection there is not a more cheering Psalm, its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best, and speaks nobly.” – Charles H. Spurgeon
– “It is one of the most excellent works of this kind which has ever appeared. It is impossible to imagine anything more solid, more beautiful, more profound, or more ornamented.” – Siméon Marotte de Muis
For our meditation this Sunday morning, let us look at Psalm 91:14-16. These three verses opens for us, the whole treasure trove, found in the rest of the Psalm. In a way, the key to all that is promised in this Psalm.
– ’14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” – Psalm 91:14-16
We can note that…
– these three verses are spoken by God, in first person.
– there are two important keys that unlock the provision, protection and the presence of God in a Christian’s life.
– “Because he hath set his love upon me” is the first key.
– “because he hath known my name” is the second key.
When a Christian sets his love upon YAHWEH, and knows His eternal and almighty name, the promises of God, in this Psalm, come to fruition.
– “therefore will I deliver him”
– “I will set him on high”
– “I will answer him”
– “I will be with him in trouble”
– “I will deliver him”
– “[I will] honour him”
– “With long life will I satisfy him”
– “[I will] shew him my salvation”
The above words from Psalm 91:14-16, express and explain to us in unmistakable terms, about God, and the key to unlock His blessings, and His abiding presence to go with us. God wants to walk with us, just as He did with, the Hebrew children, in the wilderness. He walked with them night and day. During the night, YAHWEH was their Pillar of Fire. During the day, the LORD was their Pillar of Cloud. The LORD God Almighty walked with the Hebrew children for forty years.
– “5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. 6 You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.” – Deuteronomy 29:5-6
Our LORD desires to walk with all who trust Him, all their lives. This Psalm speaks more about God’s love for us, than anything else. The key is to TRUST Him, LOVE Him, and OBEY Him, despite all that life throws at us. May the LORD help us to be found among His faithfuls. Even so, the LORD help us.
"There are blessings that some believers miss out on, simply because they are always fretting and do not trust God as they should. Here [in Psalm 91] the psalmist quotes God as saying that the blessings are for those who love God and acknowledge his name (verse 14), call upon him (verse 15), and seek satisfaction in what he alone can provide."
