Language changes with times, and some words cease to mean anything, as the days go by. It is so, not because of the word itself, but because people are using newer words. Same is the story with “Buckler” an old English word. It is not a word, which is in much use, these days.
Many times, people use the same principle of “outdated usage” in relation to God. Strange, as far as I am concerned, to think on such lines about God, but people are considering God to be an outdated concept, especially in the ‘civilised’ West. For some, God has become “irrelevant.” Whether it is “out of usage” or “outdated” or “irrelevant” – they all have the same effect – “God is not a matter of concern” is the dominant idea behind.
Thankfully, there are many, in the world today, who don’t consider God to be outdated. David of old, is a faithful man, an example for us to emulate. Let us continue to look at Psalm 18:30, for our meditation today, as we have been doing for a couple of days now.
– “30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.” – Psalm 18:30
Let us focus on the last part of this verse…“he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”
BUCKLER is a strange word to many, because it is an old English word. It means, “a small round shield held by a handle at arm’s length; a shield worn on the left arm; one that shields and protects.” The intention of David, who himself is a warrior, is to convey the idea that, God is our Protector, who, like the shield, that is held by the warrior, with his own hands. In our case, as Christians, we hold on to God our Shield, with our “hand” called faith. Therefore, YAHWEH is my “Buckler.”
Let us break up “HE is a BUCKLER to ALL THOSE that TRUST in HIM.” – and see what can we learn from it.
HE – YAHWEH
He in this context is YAHWEH, the LORD God Almighty, our Creator, our Redeemer, our Restorer and our Rejuvenator. Let there be no confusion about it. There is no other God beside YAHWEH.
– “3 “You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3
BUCKLER – SHIELD
YAHWEH is our Buckler, and our shield. He alone has the desire, and the determination, to help us, and protect us. There is none who can protect us…there are none who will.
– “3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:3
TO ALL THOSE THAT TRUST IN HIM – YAHWEH OUR PROTECTOR
YAHWEH is the buckler and the shield, and will protect ALL who TRUST in HIM. Please note the emphasis on “ALL” and “TRUST in HIM.” YAHWEH will be a buckler, and the shield, only to those, who place their faith and trust in HIM.
– “1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” – Psalms 121
HalleluYah! All glory to the LORD, who is our Buckler and our Shield. He is faithful and trustworthy, dear brothers and sisters. He truly cares for us, and our welfare. Let us learn to trust Him, and Him alone. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The sole source of ‘help’ comes from Yahweh, who, as Creator, has unlimited power."
