As we walk our Christian journey, “SOMETIMES we FAINT and are WEARY” and many times TIRED. At such times as these, the LORD invites us to lean upon Him, and get the much needed rest.
– “28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
This is precisely the text and the theme, which inspired Mrs. Mary Ann Elizabeth Lancaster, née Shorey, to pen the words for the beautiful hymn, “I have a Friend so precious” which was first printed in the “Baptist” on 26 December 1890.
The inspiration for writing this hymn, in her own words, is as follows.
– “Written one Sunday morning in the summer of 1890. While busy with household affairs some thoughts suggested by the sermon heard the previous evening (on St. Matt. xi. 29) at Leytonstone, began to shape themselves in rhyme.” [Hymnary website]
Let us look at the second stanza for our meditation this morning.
– “Sometimes I’m faint and weary, He knows that I am weak; And as He bids me lean on Him, His help I’ll gladly seek; He leads me in the path of light, Beneath a sunny sky; And so we dwell together, My Lord and I.”
The words of this stanza are the words of many a Christian. Life we are called to walk is, a life that no one else can walk. Even though there are many, who are walking the “Narrow Path” but, each of us have our own “crosses” to carry. “SOMETIMES I’M FAINT AND WEARY” is the situation of many of us. However, let us realise, and remember always that, the LORD is walking right beside us. He wishes to help us, and refresh us. Let us learn to look unto Jesus, and learn to lean on Him – Hebrews 12:1-2. He is our sure help; One who is absolutely trustworthy. HalleluYah!!!
"'Come’; he drives none away; he calls them to himself. His favorite word is ‘Come.’ Not, go to Moses – ‘Come unto me.’ To Jesus himself we must come, by a personal trust. Not to doctrine, ordinance, nor ministry are we to come first; but to the personal Saviour."
