Jesus offers to all who are, weary and heavy laden, a rest that is unimaginable – Matthew 11:28-30. What should matter to us, the weary souls, is the fact that, God, who has no obligation whatsoever towards us, because of our sin, and our rebellion, chooses to offer us, the privilege of coming to Him. What magnanimity and what generosity? Amazing, is it not?
Mrs. Mary Ann Elizabeth Lancaster, née Shorey, understood this amazing magnanimity and generosity of God, which became the foundation, for her to pen the words, for the beautiful hymn, “I have a Friend so precious” which was first printed in the “Baptist” on 26 December 1890. Let us look at stanza four for our meditation this morning.
– “I tell Him all my sorrows, I tell Him all my joys, I tell Him all that pleases me, I tell Him what annoys; He tells me what I ought to do, He tells me what to try; And so we dwell together, My Lord and I.”
The lines of this stanza, captures it beautifully, the depth of the pain, and the joys of our lives. What is significant is that, the author wants to direct us, not towards self-pity, and gloom, but towards the LORD, who will shine upon us, His grace and His glory, to lift us up from our miry pit.
– “1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust…” – Psalm 40:1-4
As Christians, walking with our LORD and Redeemer, we too will go through many a troubling times. We will be tested and tried by all kinds of situations. Many times we may be deep in anguish and agony. At such times let us never forget that we have a God, who cares for us, and is truly interested in our wellbeing, and our welfare. May the following words of the apostle Paul, encourage us to run to God, in times of need, just as the words of the hymn,, *”I have a Friend so precious”* encourage us to say *”I TELL HIM ALL MY SORROWS”* – let us pour our heart before our Creator and our Redeemer.
– “5…The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:5-7
"It is not merely words that you have to utter, you have to lay all your trouble before God. As a child tells its mother its griefs, tell the Lord all your griefs, your complaints, your miseries, your fears. Tell them all out, and great relief will come to your spirit."
