The Bible tells us in Luke 19:41, about something that we all should pay more attention, than focus on the jubilant celebrations, that are generally associated with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, on the Psalm Sunday.
– “41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,” – Luke 19:41
The Greek word used for “weep” is – ἔκλαυσεν (eklausen) – it is not a silent anguish, or a few private tears. The Saviour wept aloud, for everyone to see. The word means to mourn, to lament, and to wail aloud.
What made the Saviour, the Messiah, the Redeemer to weep? Tears are serious matter. They don’t come without a reason. Tears speak of pain, anguish and agony over something. Why did Jesus weep? Jesus wept because of the people who would reject Him.
– “37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” – Matthew 23:37
The Messiah wept because of the hearts of His people – cold, cruel and filled with evil and darkness. He wept because people were not interested in what God was interested in. He wept because people were rejecting the salvation, which is for our good. Jesus wept because, the “Chosen People” who were to represent the Light, and spread it far and wide, as His ambassadors, in the cold, cruel and dark world, sadly, where themselves become, the chief agents of darkness.
– “9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.” – John 12:9-11
– “47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. 48 If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”…53 Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death…57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.” – John 11:47-48,53,57
– “19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” – John 12:19
– “47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.” – Luke 19:47-48
Oh the darkness and the evil in the hearts of men. They are rejecting the very God whom they claim to be worshipping. What a tragedy? What about us? Do we have the eternal LIGHT in us? Or, do we have darkness reigning in us? Would Jesus weep over us too? What would Jesus do, if He were to come to our churches, and to our homes?
"Jesus' weeping is a profound expression of His compassion and sorrow for Jerusalem...indicating the depth of His lament. His tears reflect His awareness of the...spiritual blindness and rejection of His message by its inhabitants."
