Thursday, in the Passion Week, happens to be the fifth day. This day, Jesus teaches very significant things, for the spiritual life of a Christian. The Last Supper, washing of the disciples’ feet, establishment of the Holy Communion, or the LORD’s Table, some very profound teaching by Jesus, the High Priestly prayer of Jesus, the betrayal by Judas, and the subsequent arrest and trial of Jesus, in the “banana republic’s kangaroo court.”
– “1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” – John 13:1-5
The events of this evening, from that day, are very significant and poignant. We, as Christians today, ought to be asking a few basic questions – “DO WE HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE?” “DO WE DESERVE TO HAVE SUCH A SEAT?” “ARE WE WALKING WORTHY OF THAT HONOUR BESTOWED UPON US BY OUR REDEEMER?” These are the questions, that should be troubling us everyday, so that, we keep evaluating ourselves on a daily basis.
– The above questions are intended to ask ourselves, “Do you belong to Christ?”
– Remember, not all who sat that day, at the table, with the LORD Jesus, belonged to the Him. Judas turned out to be a traitor. He shamelessly betrayed his Maker, and his Master, by a kiss. By choosing to betray his Rabbi, Judas chose to work for the forces of evil, who were burning with a desire, to put an end to the eternal Light, so that, the Light would not shine, and they remain in power, holding the world captive to its whims and fancies.
When we sit at the table, we are to be like our Master. Our Master washed the feet of His disciples. Let us know that, it is God the Creator, the Righteous and Holy One, the One who was, and is, and is to come, who was washing the feet of the very people, who rejected Him, and rebelled against Him, by siding with the Serpent Lucifer. Can we now see, the true and unfiltered image of human depravity, and God’s magnanimity? Oh, what love it is, that stopped down to pick up the fallen man, the faithless traitors, and hateful betrayers – me and you, dear friends.
The lessons that are to be learnt by us, while meditating upon the Thursday of the Passion Week, is this – can we humble ourselves to the state to which the very Son of God abased Himself to seek and save us? Do we desire to walk in our Master’s ways? Are we walking in the footsteps of our Redeemer?
What else did Jesus teach His disciples, that day? The following Scripture portion applies to us, very much, even today.
– “12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.” – John 13:12-16
– “34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” – John 13:34-35
1- “DO WE HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE?”
2- “DO WE DESERVE TO HAVE SUCH A SEAT?”
3- “ARE WE WALKING WORTHY OF THAT HONOUR BESTOWED UPON US BY OUR REDEEMER?”
4- “DO WE TRULY BELONG TO CHRIST THE REDEEMER, OR, LIKE JUDAS ISCARIOT, BELONG TO THE FORCES OF EVIL, EVEN THOUGH HE HAD A SEAT AT THE TABLE?”
Our life, and our lifestyle choices will speak about our spiritual status.
"Nowhere else is His speech at once so simple and so deep. Nowhere else have we the heart of God so unveiled to us… The immortal words which Christ spoke in that upper chamber are His highest self-revelation in speech, even as the Cross to which they led up is His most perfect self-revelation in act."
