Many people approach Good Friday with sentimental and emotional thoughts. Secondly, most of the Christian world would feel very sad and sorry for Jesus. The feeling behind such a response being, the intense and painful suffering, that Jesus had to go through and endure. So the question for us this morning is, “FOR WHOM ARE WE WEEPING?”
– “26 Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. 27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.” – Luke 23:26-28
The answer to the question, “FOR WHOM ARE WE WEEPING?” depends upon “WHOM DO WE SEE ON THE CROSS?” If we see Jesus, then, we surely would be weeping for Jesus, just like the so many women and men. If we see Jesus, in our place, then, we will still weep, but with years of gratitude and thankfulness.
What our LORD had said to the women, on the day of His crucifixion, is very important, even to us, today.
– “28…“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.” – Luke 23:28
It helps us to see things clearly, when we realise that, it is our sins, that put Him on the tree, in the first place. Therefore, we are called to weep for ourselves, and our children.
We also see, sadly, many who schemed and plotted to somehow kill Jesus, even if they had to employ trickery, lies and manipulation. They appear to be satisfied and happy with all that was happening. All their efforts to put an end to this “blasphemous” Man, were bearing fruit, at last. They surely were happy, shedding “tears” of joy.
What about us, this morning? What kind of tears are rolling out of our eyes? Do we see tears of repentance and regret in our eyes? Are tears of gratitude and thanksgiving rolling out of our eyes? If so, praise be to the LORD!!!
"Therefore weep not for him, but let us weep for our own sins, and the sins of our children, which caused his death; and weep for fear of the miseries we shall bring upon ourselves, if we slight his love, and reject his grace."
