The names of YAHWEH reveals to us the character of God, which helps us gain a deeper understanding of who God is. This helps us with our walk with the LORD.
– “10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” – Proverbs 18:10
Let us look at JEHOVAH JIREH, for this morning’s meditation, in continuation of our study on the seven names of YAHWEH, let us look at the first name – “JEHOVAH JIREH” – in this series.
The name Jehovah Jireh means, “THE LORD WILL PROVIDE” as is seen in the incident where Abraham was asked by YAHWEH to offer Isaac, the child born because of God’s promise, in Genesis 22.
– “14 So Abraham called the name of that place, [Jehovah Jireh] “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” – Genesis 22:14
The name “Jehovah Jireh” signifies God’s faithful provision, and His ability to meet all our needs, even in seemingly impossible situations.
The word “Jireh” means, “to see” or “to look” in the Hebrew language. Thus, it implies that, God who is Omniscient, sees every situation that we may be going through, and understands all our needs, and helps provide a solution, that is truly in our interest, and for our blessing. Simply put, Jehovah Jireh means “the Lord will see to it” or “the Lord will provide” emphasizing God’s desire, His ability and His willingness to meet all our needs.
This name reveals to us, the faithfulness of YAHWEH, to not only see our situation, but also to fulfill the promise of provision and protection, by His presence in our lives. The words of Jesus to the scared and angry disciples, when they hit a storm, while Jesus was sleeping in the boat, is a fine example of “God will Provide.” This incident truly reflects, human impatience of the disciples, born of fear, and our lack of faith and trust in God, to stand good in regards to His promises.
The name, “Jehovah Jireh” of YAHWEH should be a reminder to all disciples of the LORD Jesus, that even when we are facing though and testing times, we don’t need to be scared or lose faith. The LORD will see, and will provide an appropriate solution. On our part, we ought place our faith and trust in the LORD, and wait upon Him patiently, to find a solution, to all that is troubling us, just as YAHWEH provided Abraham, a ram, just in time, in the place of Isaac, his son. Even so, the LORD help us.
"...this name that came from Abraham’s grateful and wondering lips contains a truth which holds true in all regions of our wants. On the lowest level, the outward supply of outward needs; on a higher, the means of discharging hard duties and a path through sharp trials; and, on the highest of all, the spotless sacrifice which alone avails for the world’s sins-these are the things which God provides."
