The Word of God helps us to know and understand that, our safety and security is not entirely in our hands. Yes, there are a lot of things that we can do, and should do, to keep ourselves safe and secure. This doesn’t mean in no way that, we don’t need anyone, or anyone’s help, for our safety and security. It would be foolish to think on these lines. Yet man thinks on those lines, and says, “We don’t need God.” This is precisely the reason, why the Bible says…
– “10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” – Proverbs 18:10
The Bible further informs us that…
– “1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” – Psalm 127:1-2
The second name of YAHWEH, for our meditation is “JEHOVAH NISSI” – this when translated means – “THE LORD IS MY BANNER” and is found in Exodus 17, referring to God’s protection and guidance.
– “15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-Nissi:” – Exodus 17:15
The Bible dictionaries inform us the true meaning of the word “NISSI”
– “Nissi comes from the Hebrew word Nes (nês), meaning something lifted up as a standard or banner. A standard is a flag or rallying point during battle, while a banner was usually set on top of a mountain to show people where to assemble and it flew over the warriors as they fought.”
Is that not wonderful to know that, YAHWEH, the LORD God Almighty is, our “STANDARD” and our “BANNER” over us!!! YAHWEH is our safety. YAHWEH is our security. YAHWEH is our everything. HalleluYah!!! Therefore the Word of God shouts into our ears…
– “8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” – Psalm 118:8-9
However, unless we place our faith in the LORD, and obey Him, in all what he is asking of us, this STANDARD and this BANNER would not be useful and effective. In the preceding verse of Exodus 17:15, we see this ever so clearly. Moses had to trust YAHWEH, and obey what He had asked him to do – to strike the rock for water. May sound silly to many, this way of getting water.
Secondly we see, Joshua and the brave men fighting the battle, while Moses lifted up his hands to YAHWEH in prayer. Aaron and Hur were there to help keep Moses’ hand lifted up in prayer. Only when all of them worked with God, did they get the victory on that day.
Lastly, never should we think that we get water and the victory because of our efforts, even though they are important. We should never forget that it is God, because of whom, we get the water and the victory. Let us never ever forget it.
So, now the important question – Is YAHWEH our STANDARD and our BANNER? Have we lifted up this STANDARD and this BANNER in our lives? Do we seek Him, more than anyone else? Do we run to Him for our safety and security in life? May we always lift up the LORD God Almighty in our lives, as our STANDARD and our BANNER. Even so the LORD help us.
"In Exodus 17 we see examples of God’s power and man’s effort working together. Moses struck the rock; but only God could bring the water. Joshua fought, Moses prayed, but only God gave the victory over Amalek. In it all, God received the glory. It wasn’t Israel is my banner or Moses is my banner or Joshua is my banner; rather it was Yahweh-Nissi : THE-LORD-IS-MY-BANNER. We sometimes are even more aware of the power and the help of God when we work together with Him than we are when God does the work all by Himself. Jehovah-Nissi came after the battle with Amalek, not after the dead Egyptians at the Red Sea."
