The Word of God urges the reader to passionately pursue after truth. Such is the place, the LORD God Almighty, gives to truth. It reveals to us its prominence and its worth.
– “23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” – Proverbs 23:23
We live in a world where, truth is disliked and hated, and it is but obvious that, the world will come up with its own counterfeit “truth” which “almost looks like the original, but is never the same.
– “25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” – Romans 1:25
– “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.” – George Orwell
For a Christian, truth is all that matters. It is much more than a position of reference, and a proposition worth following.
– “31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free…36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” – John 8:31-32
Let us look at the wisdom that Proverbs 23:23 has to offer us.
1- “BUY THE TRUTH…”
We are exhorted to pay money and a cost, and “buy” the truth. Truth is so precious and priceless that, it is worth selling everything that one has, to buy it. Therefore, “Buy the truth…”
– “God loves to honor the needle of truth in a haystack of error.” – J. I. Packer, Keep in Step With the Spirit
2- “…and SELL IT NOT…”
Whoever has the truth, should not only hold on to it, but hold on to it with all their strength. For, there will be enough enticing and alluring temptations to sell it. The moment we sell the truth, we not only become bankrupt, but become totally captive to the lie that we bought. Therefore, “sell it not” my friend.
– “People do not believe lies because they have to, but because they want to.” – Malcolm Muggeridge
3- Truth’s Three Friends – “… ALSO WISDOM, and INSTRUCTION, and UNDERSTANDING.”
Truth, that we possess manifests itself in three different dimensions. It is seen in and through the “WISDOM” “INSTRUCTION” and “UNDERSTANDING” that we display in our lives.
– “WISDOM (Hebrew – Chochmah) – practical knowledge.
– INSTRUCTION (Hebrew – Musar) – moral culture and discipline.
– UNDERSTANDING (Hebrew – Binah) – the faculty of discernment.
These three are the fruit of the tree called “TRUTH” which we will bear, when we pursue the truth, passionately purposefully, and wholeheartedly.
The world we live in today has no desire to seek the truth. Truth is no more absolute. Truth is no more the referral point, as is the magnetic compass for a sailor on the seas. The world operates on this principle, these days – “Everyone is for themselves. I believe whatever I think is the truth. If you don’t believe it, then it is your problem, and not mine.”
– “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.” – Flannery O’Connor
– “We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.” – George Orwell
How about us? Do we passionately and purposefully seek for truth? Are we dispassionate and unbiased in seeking for the truth? Are we prejudiced with preconceived notions about truth? May we truly and honestly pursue after truth, in all matters of life, with honesty and integrity. If not, we will end up believing a lie, that is “almost” true…which is just as black as the blackest of a lie, and we will be left lurching, in the dark web of lies.
– “3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” – 3 John 1:3-4
Even so the LORD help us all, to walk in His truth, in all matters of life.
"Relatively few contemporary Christians are prepared to suffer for the faith, because the therapeutic society that has formed them denies the purpose of suffering in the first place, and the idea of bearing pain for the sake of truth seems ridiculous."
