Prayers reveal a great deal about us, our situation, our needs, our desires, our hearts and our minds. What is our prayer to our LORD, this morning?
Psalm 86, written by David, is called, “David’s Prayer.” What a prayer indeed, it is. A prayer that reveals the heart and mind of David. Charles H. Spurgeon, commenting about Psalm 86 observes this.
– “There are four other psalms each called by the name Tephillah, or ‘prayer,’ but this deserves to be distinguished from the rest and known as ‘the prayer of David,’ even as the ninetieth Psalm is known as ‘the prayer of Moses.’ It savours of David. The man of sincerity, of ardor, of trials, of faults, and of great heart, pleads, sobs, and trusts through all the verses of this psalm.” – Charles Spurgeon
All of the seventeen verses in this Psalm are written thoughtfully, and with an intent and purpose. Such words don’t flow, unless they have a personal meaning and relevance. Thus it speaks of David’s experiences, and his understanding of God. What touched me personally is what David writes in Psalm 86:11-13.
– “11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. 12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. 13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.” – Psalms 86:11-13
For our meditation this morning, let us look at the first part of verse eleven.
– “11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”
These nineteen words in verse eleven, speak so clearly about David’s heart, mind, intent, and his desires. David is seeking the LORD for a very specific request. He is asking God to teach him, the way of the LORD. We see the passion, his determination, and his earnestness, with which he is seeking the LORD. Small wonder then, the LORD called David, “A man after His own heart” – 1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22.
What is our prayer this morning? What is it that we are earnestly and sincerely seeking the LORD about? Does God take the first place in such a list of our needs?
– “3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3
What is it that we are praying for most, and desiring with all our hearts? What is it that is consuming our hearts?
– “30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:30-33
This morning, IS THIS OUR PRAYER? – “Teach me thy way, O LORD” Even so, the LORD help us.
"Most of us, when we pray, are concerned about deliverance and help and guidance and such things. But we are not nearly as concerned to be taught God’s way and to be helped to serve him with an undivided heart."
