What does the LORD count as worthy, in human beings? What virtues do have value and worth for us, and our living? The Bible makes the heart of God, and what He desires to see in us, very very clear. The following verses from Deuteronomy are the essence of all what the LORD desires from His people.
– “12 “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” – Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Let us read the same passage from the Amplified Bible version. It helps us see it better.
– “12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear [and worship] the LORD your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], to walk [that is, to live each and every day] in all His ways and to love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul [your choices, your thoughts, your whole being], 13 and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?” – Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Here under are the list of things, that God is asking from His Chosen People – the Israel of God, which includes Christians – “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you…”
– to FEAR the LORD your God
– to WALK in ALL His ways
– to LOVE Him
– to SERVE the LORD your God with ALL YOUR HEART and with ALL YOUR SOUL
– to KEEP the COMMANDMENTS of the LORD and His STATUTES
These words from Deuteronomy 10:12-13 are spoken by Moses, as a summing up of all what God had spoken to the “Chosen People” through His servant Moses at Sinai. By repeating the essence of it, Moses is emphasising the importance of these words, for the well-being, and the welfare of the People of God.
– “We are here taught our duty to God in our principles and our practices. We must fear the Lord our God. We must love him, and delight in communion with him. We must walk in the ways in which he has appointed us to walk. We must serve him with all our heart and soul. What we do in his service we must do cheerfully, and with good will. We must keep his commandments. There is true honour and pleasure in obedience.” – Matthew Henry
The desire of God, as expressed in Deuteronomy 10:12-13, places utmost emphasises on the heart, its desires and our attitude towards God, as Christians and the Chosen of God – 1 Peter 2:9-10. How we look at the list speaks volumes about us, and about the importance we give to God, in our lives. It speaks about our obedience and faithfulness towards God.
How are we faring dear friends? Do we wholeheartedly desire – to FEAR the LORD our God; to WALK in ALL His ways; to LOVE Him; to SERVE the LORD our God with ALL OUR HEART and with ALL OUR SOUL; to KEEP the COMMANDMENTS of the LORD and His STATUTES?
""In a passage of great beauty, [Deuteronomy 10:12-13,] thrilling with earnestness, Moses made a statement summarizing the truth concerning the requirements of God as His people entered the land. The whole revealed the fact that everything depended on their relationship to Him. They were to fear Him, that is reverence; to walk in His ways, that is obedience; to love Him, that is worship; to serve Him, that is co-operation; to keep His commandments, that is fidelity."
