David is gifted with the ability to see, the mighty workings of YAHWEH, his God; and also see, deep into his own heart, and all his struggles, fears and troubles; and express the same, in meaningful words, which help us gain, not only an insight into the struggles of a human heart, and the pitfalls in our lives, but also help us get courage to face them, and wisdom to overcome them, by knowing who truly, God is, and what is His nature and His character. One such Psalm, where we can get deep insights, and gain wisdom for our lives is, Psalm 143. Let us meditate upon the first verse this morning.
– “1 Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness.” – Psalm 143:1
The New King James version titles Psalm 143 as, “An Earnest Appeal for Guidance and Deliverance.” David, from a very young age, realised the greatest secret of life – to SEEK GOD unhesitantly, to DEPEND on HIM unquestioningly, to TRUST HIM unflinchingly, and to OBEY HIM unreservedly.
In verse one, David is appealing to God, His only source of help, strength and courage, to hear his prayer, his supplication, his heart cry. The very first words – “Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications!” speaks about the desperation in his heart. There are two parts in this sentence; and both mean the same. David uses different words to say the same thing.
– “Hear my prayer, O LORD
– Give ear to my supplications
David, in the second part of verse one, appeals to God’s faithfulness, and His righteousness, for answering his pleas and prayers. To be honest, it is more to remind himself, the faithfulness and the righteousness of God. This is to reassure his troubled heart, more than, to remind God, who He is.
– In Your faithfulness answer me
– And in Your righteousness.
Don’t know what were the actual incidents that prompted David to pen such opening lines. Whatever they may be, he was desperate for God to hear his cry for help. They also tell us that, David knew where exactly to go, and to whom exactly to seek, for the remedy, he so desperately needs.
The lessons for us this morning.
– Always Run to God, whenever something troubles us.
– Always Remember that, God is faithful and righteous.
– Always be Reassured that, no matter what, we can approach God.
God of the Bible, the One who is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent, is the only source of all our help, strength and courage. He alone has the heart to help us. He alone has the power to help us. He alone has the capability to solve all our problems. Therefore, it is not only imperative upon us to seek God, but much more than that, it is wise to go seek Someone, who is all the above, and on top of that, good, gracious and merciful, towards us, and all our needs. What are we waiting for? Let us make God Almighty, our refuge! Let us run to Him, anytime and every time, we are disturbed or troubled. Even so, the LORD help us.
"David knew something of the character and nature of God, and this shaped his prayer life. He could never ask God to be unfaithful or unrighteous. Yet he could ask God to act according to His character, and David did boldly make his request on that basis."
