The whole blessing that we read in Numbers 6:22-26 is an initiative of YAHWEH, the God who chose to make a covenant, with His People.
– “22 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, 24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” – Numbers 6:22-26
Herein we see God’s heart for us, His people, and His deepest desire for their welfare. It was His desire, and is still His desire, to bless His children – Jew or Gentile alike. This is precisely what we see, right at the very beginning of everything, in the creation account. This desire of the Almighty God, to bless His Creation, is very clearly seen in Genesis 1;26-28.
– “26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” – Genesis 1:26-28
God’s heart for His creation, is seen all too clearly, in all His dealings with us. Despite our rebellion, and our sin, God chose only to banish man, from the garden of Eden, so that, the damage caused by our sin, would not become irreparably permanent, and beyond any scope for redemption and restoration. Here too we see the magnanimous heart of God, thinking about our good, and our welfare – Genesis 3:22-24.
This love, this grace, and this mercy of God, is seen nowhere better than, what He had done for us, on the Cross of Calvary. All what the Creator went through, at the hands of His own creation, by becoming flesh and blood, is an indisputable indication of God’s heart, that bleeds for us, our welfare, and our progress.
– “6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” – Romans 5:6-10
The whole three fold blessing of Numbers 6;24-26, is “A WHOLESOME PERSONAL BLESSING” to be pronounced on behalf of YAHWEH, the covenant keeping God, upon all, who come seeking His refuge – Jew or Gentile alike. For it was not meant for a small group of people, but the whole world – John 3:16. Here we see, the LORD using the word, “THEE” or “YOU” six times, in these three small verses. Does it not indicate to us, the heart of God, and His unconditional agape love towards His Chosen People? “The LORD…BLESS THEE…KEEP THEE…MAKE HIS FACE SHINE UPON THEE…BE GRACIOUS UNTO THEE…LIFT UP HIS COUNTENANCE UPON THEE…GIVE THEE PEACE.”
– “Jehovah the Father blesses with all spiritual blessings, with electing, adopting, justifying, and pardoning grace, with regenerating and calling, and persevering grace, and with eternal life:”
– “Jehovah the Son blesses particularly with redeeming grace, and has a concern in all the other blessings; the saints are blessed with them in him, they are all in his hands, they are procured by him, come through him, and are the gifts of his grace:”
– “Jehovah the Spirit blesses as a spirit of regeneration and sanctification, as the spirit of faith, as a comforter, as the spirit of adoption, and as the earnest and sealer of the saints unto the day of redemption:” – Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible
What an amazing blessing, has the LORD our God initiated, to tell us, of His heart, His desire, and His care for us, and our welfare! “THE BLESSING OF THE LORD” is indeed “A WHOLESOME PERSONAL BLESSING” from our God, which covers, every aspect of our human life. HalleluYah!!! May we never ever forget this, and behave beggarly, asking for this, that and everything. *He promised everything, even before we asked it.
– “32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” – Romans 8:33.
We need to trust our Creator, and obey the One who redeemed us, for He will surely never let us go without blessing us. Even so, the LORD help us.
"[The]...blessing expressed in the most unconditional manner, the thought, that God would bestow upon His congregation, the whole fulness of the blessing, enfolded in His Divine Being, which was manifested as Jehovah. But not only does the name Jehovah denote God as the absolute Being, who revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Spirit in the historical development of His purpose of salvation, for the redemption of fallen man; but the substance of this blessing, which He caused to be pronounced upon His congregation, unfolded the grace of God in the threefold way in which it is communicated to us through the Father, Son, and Spirit."
