What would be most earnest desire that one could ever have in their lives? Different people would come up with, different answers. How would we, as Christians, answer the same question? What would be the most earnest desire that, we could ever have, in our lives, as Christians? I would answer the question thus, “A desire to have the grace of God upon me.” What about you?
– *”24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”* – Numbers 6:24-26
For our meditation this morning, let us look at the fourth blessing in the six part blessing from Numbers 6:24-26.
– “THE LORD BE GRACIOUS UNTO THEE”
It is indeed amazing to see that, God in the blessing, that He wished to bless His people with, had included grace into it. Then God asks the priests, to bless the people with the blessing, that has grace, written into it, by God’s own decree. It tells us of God’s compassionate heart, and the significance, and the need of, God’s grace upon our lives.
– “17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” – John 1:17
Grace, what a sweet sounding word is it, in the whole Bible. Grace simply means, unmerited favour. The one who urges for grace, is the one who knows, he is unworthy in any sense of the word, and knows that, only God could be His refuge, because God is gracious.
– “8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
Grace is a gift from God, cannot be demanded. It can only be humbly requested. Grace is the gate that opens a Christian to every other spiritual blessing from God. For God’s grace make it possible for Him to “overlook” our sin. Without God’s grace upon our lives, we would be utters destroyed.
– “The grace of God is God’s undeserved favor, kindness, and unmerited blessing towards humanity, given through His love and power. It encompasses both the general blessings seen in nature and common life, as well as specific spiritual blessings for believers, including salvation through Jesus, forgiveness of sins, and the empowerment to live a godly life. God’s grace is a gift, not something earned by human effort, and is received through faith and belief in Him and His Son, Jesus Christ.” – Google AI
If we want to understand grace, then we should read the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Herein we see, God dealing with human beings, who just rebelled against Him, and declared themselves His enemies, siding with the devil himself. Yet, we see God, being gracious towards Adam and Eve, and to us too, when He dealt graciously, by simply making them know the consequences of the sin. In the same breath, God our Creator announced, the redemption plan right in the Garden of Eden – Genesis 3:16. This is grace at its best.
– “The Cross is the lightning rod of grace that short-circuited God’s wrath to Christ so that only the light of His love remains for believers.” – A. W. Tozer
We should always appreciate God’s grace, that is freely and abundantly poured upon us, out of His free will. It speaks about God, and His heart. It speaks about our desperate need, and our utter helplessness. Oh, the amazing grace of God, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. Yes, a wretch, a helpless and hopeless wretch. May we never ever forget it. Even so, “THE LORD BE GRACIOUS UNTO THEE” and help us.
"Grace in the biblical context refers to unmerited favor and kindness from God. This part of the blessing emphasizes God's willingness to forgive and show compassion. The Hebrew word for grace, "chen," implies a deep, loving-kindness that is not earned. This concept is foundational in both the Old and New Testaments, as seen in Ephesians 2:8-9, where salvation is described as a gift of grace. The call for God to be gracious is a request for His mercy and benevolence, reflecting His covenantal love for His people. This grace is ultimately fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus Christ, who embodies God's grace and truth (John 1:14)."
