Each of us, when facing an issue, a problem, or a difficult situation, we have the freedom to choose our response, that takes us on a certain path. What we choose as our response, words we speak, the deeds we do, and the actions we take, is an indication of, what is deep within our hearts.
– Lucifer, when rebelled against God, his Creator, did not repent of his sin, but chose to continue to rebel.
– Adam and Eve, when they sinned, chose to give excuses, and were utterly unwilling to own up their sin.
– Saul, when he sinned, chose to justify his disobedience, and never said a sorry, with a sincere heart.
– David, when he sinned with Bathsheba, did his best to be an ostrich – trying to live a normal life, as if, nothing had happened. However, when confronted by prophet Nathan, he simply said sorry, unambiguously, without any pretence; and confessed his sin, repented of it, and did the right thing by marrying Bathsheba – a just restitution for the sin, instigated and committed by him.
Some people can never get to own up their sin, confess it, sincerely apologise and repent of it. They simply cannot do it. They choose to go in circles, and give every kind of excuse conceivable, to avoid uttering the words of regret and remorse, and repent of their sin.
An honest person, on the other hand, when he sins, will confess his sin; express remorse; and seeks God for restoration and reformation, while making efforts to restitute the hurt party; and will want to restore the broken relationship.
– “1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah” – Psalm 32:1-5
How about us, this morning? Where do we stand? May we belong to the group of people who choose to confess their sin honestly and sincerely, without pretence, hesitation or delay. May we choose the righteous path of confession and restoration. Even so, the LORD help us.
"Ah! but there are too many who make confession, having no broken hearts, no streaming eyes, no flowing tears, no humbled spirits. Know ye this, that ten thousand confessions, if they are made by hardened hearts, if they do not spring from really contrite spirits, they shall be only additions to your guilt as they are mockeries before the Most High."
