There is an old English proverb, which I personally like very much. It speaks wisdom in simple words, and gives us insight into human hearts, and human character, in plain words.
– “Actions speak louder than words.”
I like this proverb for its wisdom, and the value it adds to us, if we care to listen to it. I think it should be remembered by everyone, and it needs to be recited ever so often, to keep our feet, firmly on the ground. If not, we may venture into fantasy land, where we build castles in the air. “[The proverb is] said to emphasize that what you do is more important and shows your intentions and feelings more clearly than what you say.” [Cambridge Dictionary]
Now, let us see what the Bible, which is the written Word of God, has to say to us, on this subject. The value and the worth of what the Bible says, far exceeds any conventional human wisdom, despite its value.
– “11 Even a child is known by his deeds, Whether what he does is pure and right.” – Proverbs 20:11
The emphasis of the Word of God is on the inner character of each of us. This is hidden from the sight of everyone else. However, if we want to know, it is visible clearly, in what we do. “Our actions are a reflection of our inner character. Even at a young age, what we do speaks volumes about who we are.” [Berean Study Bible Notes]
If something appears like evil, speaks like evil, and does act like evil, then it is evil, and such a thing can’t be anything else, other than evil. This is the wisdom of old, where people were much more honest and transparent, than what they are today. These days, we have all sorts of mental gymnastics done, to explain away, and defend something, which is inherently, and very openly evil, as something, which is good and right.
There are people even today, who call a cold and cruel genocide as a necessity. Much worse, the fault of those being killed, rather than the one who kills. The victim is portrayed as the perpetrator, and the actual perpetrator as the victim – nay, the only victim. What a tragedy it is! Sadly, there is a huge Christian consent to such a thinking. It is quite revealing, the heart of a Christian, who claims to follow Christ Jesus, the LORD and Saviour.
Let us read, a few more Scripture portions, to see, what stand the LORD speaks to us, in His written Word, in regards to Proverbs 20:11.
– “20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.” – Matthew 7:20
– “16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.” – Titus 1:16
– “3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” – 1 John 2:3-6
How about us? How are our thoughts and our actions. Do our actions and our thoughts, on the same line? Would God, when He sees us, say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant?” – Matthew 25:21. What do our actions say about us? Let us THINK ABOUT IT. Even so, the LORD help us.
"Certainly no child who says, ‘I am well behaved’ will find his or her words taken at face value. People will evaluate the child by how he or she behaves. The implication is that appearances and words can be deceiving; behaviour is a better criterion of judgment."
