A whole lot of people celebrate Christmas in this world. All of them have their own reasons for the celebrations. Some celebrate the birth of Jesus, the good man. Some because it a festival celebrated by a lot of people. Some “celebrate” because it brings good business to them. Some celebrate because everyone else is celebrating, and they wish to be part of the most happening thing. Very few celebrate Christmas, because it is the birth of the Saviour!
– “10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” – Luke 2:10-11
If one wants a serious answer about “Why Jesus is born?” then they have to ask “Why did we need a Saviour in the first place?” Many do not come thus far, in their quest to know the answers. Let us answer these questions – “Why Jesus is born?” and “Why did we need a Saviour in the first place?”
It doesn’t take the brain of a nuclear scientist to realise that, the world we live in, is a broken place. Man had been trying for a long time to fix it. Sadly, every such effort towards self-reform has failed. Any solution to rectify the problems of man seem to work for a few days, then we are back to square one. May be, much worse than what we were earlier. This is obvious from the steady rise in the wickedness and evil in the society. Man doesn’t seem to figure out a solution, and is unable to fix it.
– “5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” – Genesis 6:5-6
What man doesn’t know, and will never ever know is that, we cannot fix, on our own, the problem that we have. The problem is not with our minds, but it is with our hearts. Yes, the problem is with the heart of man. This is where the problem is. That is why every solution that our minds come up with have failed, and will fail. We are not addressing the heart of the problem – we never ever can.
– “9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” – Jeremiah 17:9
– “6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.” – Isaiah 64:6-7
The solution to the problem of man had to come from God alone. Because of our sin, the relationship with our Creator is broken beyond repair, and we are left helpless and hopeless. This is why God Himself had come down to the earth, born just as you and me, in flesh and blood, as the LORD Jesus Christ, to seek and save us, from our sin, and the consequences of our rebellion.
– “21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:21
– “10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” – Luke 19:10
– “6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly…8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10…when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son…” – Romans 5:6,8-10
The LORD Jesus Christ, because of His sinless birth, His righteous and sinless life, and His death on the cross as an innocent Man, has become our Saviour – the ONLY SAVIOUR that the world has.
– “5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,” – 1 Timothy 2:5-6
– “6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – John 14:6
The question, ‘What does Jesus mean to us?’ will answer the question of ‘Why are we celebrating Christmas?’ Therefore, let us ask ourselves the question, “Why are we celebrating Christmas?” Is it because Jesus is our Saviour? Is it because my sins are forgiven of me by the LORD Jesus? Why are we celebrating Christmas? May we pause from all what we are doing; take time in the midst of all these celebrations, and ask ourselves this question, “WHY AM I CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS?” Even so, the LORD help us.
"In Christ’s first coming, He implemented a rescue plan conceived in the mind of God before the foundation of the world. He did not come to promote holiday cheer, boost end-of-year sales, or serve as the central figure in a Nativity scene. He came to save sinners. To save sinners, Christ had to put away what makes people sinners–namely, sin."
