The Bible tells us that the LORD is sanctifying us by His Holy Spirit. Sanctification is nothing but God transforming us from our evil ways that proceed from our evil heart, into a righteous person, that proceeds from a righteous heart. Sanctification in simple words is, God moulding us into the image of His Son, the LORD Jesus Christ, after we have accepted the LORD Jesus as our Saviour.
Let us look at some Scripture references, to see what exactly the LORD is working in us.
– “29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…”* – Romans 8:29a
– “16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away…8 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 3:16,18
– “10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” – Colossians 3:10
– “2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” – 1 John 3:2
– “23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” – Ephesians 4:23-24
Expounding Ephesians 4:20-24, Enduring Word Commentary says thus…
– “‘Put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness:’ The new man is the new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) created in us at conversion. It is the person created according to the image of Jesus Christ and instinctively righteous and holy. It is in contrast to the old man, who is the person inherited from Adam and who instinctively rebels against God.” – Enduring Word Commentary
Let us pause here this morning and take a stock of our spiritual life. Is this “New Man” or “New Person” that is birthed in us, as the LORD Jesus explained to Nicodemus in John 3:1-21, doing well? What is our spiritual status? How is our spiritual health? How is our transformation process going on? Are we moving closer to the “image” of our LORD Jesus Christ? Do people see our LORD Jesus in our thoughts, words and deeds? If so, how much of the LORD Jesus is seen in us?
Whatever the condition that we are in, this morning, let us right away stop all what we are doing, and seek the LORD Jesus, to help us live for Him in a manner that glorifies Him. This is the aim and the goal of the Christian life.
– “1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2
Even so, the LORD help us.
"'and have put on the new self' [Colossians 3:10] This...signifies a transformation that occurs in a believer's life. The imagery of "putting on" suggests a deliberate action, akin to changing clothes, symbolizing a departure from the old sinful nature and embracing a new identity in Christ. This concept is echoed in Ephesians 4:24, where believers are encouraged to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. The "new self" represents a regenerated nature, aligning with the teachings of Jesus about being born again (John 3:3). This transformation is not merely external but involves a profound internal change, reflecting the indwelling of the Holy Spirit."
