Psalms are one of my favourite portions in the Bible. They speak the truth about God, His glory, and His loving kindness, in plain and simple language. They are the real life experiences of children of God, who truly and faithfully followed the LORD their God.
Let us look at Psalm 63 this morning. This is a Psalm written by David the shepherd king, when he was in the wilderness of Judah, in all probability running away from the murderous king Saul, than Absalom, his own son, trying to kill him. What we get to see is the character of David, in the face of clear and present danger, where his life could be taken away, by those who held immense power, and are driven by pure hate and vengeful for him.
In the face of such a situation, David begins the Psalm with an assertion that most of us may not even think of, considering the situation he was in.
– “1 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.” – Psalm 63:1
The first words that come on to our lips, when things are not going in our favour, and when there is a terrible and life threatening danger lurking at our door, reveals the true content of our heart, and the actual and unveneered character of our faith. David declares…
– O GOD, YOU ARE MY GOD
– EARLY WILL I SEEK YOU
– MY SOUL THIRSTS FOR YOU
– MY FLESH LONGS FOR YOU IN A DRY AND THIRSTY LAND WHERE THERE IS NO WATER
When danger is lurking in the shadows, what comes to our minds? What kind of words do we blurt out, dear brothers and sisters? When we are running in the wilderness, trying to escape from our enemy, who is bent upon utterly destroy us, what do we seek earnestly and wholeheartedly? *This will surely reveal a lot of our Christian faith. It speaks volumes about the character of our faith.* Do we squeal like Job’s wife? Or, do we trustingly walk by faith like Job, the righteous?
Dear brothers and sisters, may we be found in the mould of the men and women of God, who chose to trust God and praise Him in the midst of their tough and testing times. They were not cowards, running away from their problems. Nay dear friends, they knew all too well who their God is, and were simply declaring it out loud. They also knew their own finiteness and the frailty of their strength. May we too be found in such a company. Even so, the LORD help us.
"There was no desert in his heart, [David,] though there was a desert around him. We too may expect to be cast into rough places…In such seasons, may the Eternal Comforter abide with us, and cause us to bless the Lord at all times, making even the solitary place to become a temple for Jehovah."
