How do we approach God, whenever we come to Him in praise and prayer? What kind of attitude fuels our prayers and our seeking the LORD Jesus Christ? Do we come with a sense of entitlement? Do we come with a sense of “God is obligated to do this for us?” Or, do we come with a deep sense of gratitude and humility? Well, it is more appropriate and acceptable to approach God with the latter.
David, the shepherd king, speaks some very important words, which reflects his attitude and approach to God, while giving the offerings for the building of God’s temple.
– “14 But who am I, and who are my people, That we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, And of Your own we have given You.” – 1 Chronicles 29:14
David knew all to well that man in all his splendour and glory is but dust and vapour. In the total sum of all who we are, at our very best, we are but nothing more than a speck in the dust – absolutely of no value, except for what God had graciously and mercifully given us.
– “17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ 18 “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” – Deuteronomy 8:17-18
– “1 The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.” – Psalm 24:1
– “14 Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it.” – Deuteronomy 10:14
Our perception of who we are plays a significant and dominant role in the way we approach God. Our attitude is a reflection of all what we think about ourselves. Our attitude will determine our altitude. When we realise the true reality of ourselves, and our actual worth in the light of our sin and our rebellion against God, then we have no room for pride and boastful attitude. We are filled with godly humility, which shapes our attitude and our approach towards the LORD Jesus, and towards everything else in our life.
– “1 Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? 2 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” – Isaiah 66:1-2
O LORD who are we that we should boast about ourselves and our abilities and possessions? For all what we have, and will ever have is but a gracious and generous gift from You. May we always realise this, and always remember this. Help us to always approach You with humility. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less."
