As part of our accumulated knowledge, we know a lot of things. How much of it do we truly believe is known in the way we conduct ourselves when faced with a tough situation where the knowledge that we possess would help us sail through that particular storm. For example, we know that the LORD Jesus is the Sovereign King over everything in life. Yet, worry, stress and fear seems to have its sway over us, and we seem to be under its control. When the knowledge that we possess is not applied to the situation; and such knowledge doesn’t help us through the storm, by giving us the sustaining strength to walk through the trial; then such knowledge is not at all of any use to us. The problem is with us, not the knowledge itself.
David, writing the Psalm 24 declares in the very first verse itself…
– “1 The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” – Psalm 24:1
We all theoretically acknowledge the above verse in our hearts and minds. Yet, many of us, when first signs of struggle, sufferings, storms appear on our horizon, we seem to crumble and be crushed under its weight. The knowledge that, the LORD under whose shelter we have come to rest is the Sovereign King of all creation, simply evaporates, and we seem to run helter skelter trying to solve the storm on our own, to safely come out of it. Such a thing is a futile effort, when we don’t seem to trust God, who is the LORD, over and above all that is visible and invisible.
What David writes in Psalm 24:1 also hits directly at any sense of superiority of any particular people group, or racial entity – “Chosen People” or otherwise. We Christians, just like the Jews, can erroneously assume that, we are “very special people” to the God of the Bible. This leads to a sense of entitlement, and the belief in our “supremacy” over and above the rest of the people and the world. Such a thinking is SIN in its WORST form, and is ABHORRED by the LORD Jesus Christ. The Word of God never promotes even remotely, “supremacy” of any and every kind, Including “racial supremacy” – the LORD utterly hates it. ” Understanding this, David declares that – “1 The earth is the LORD’s…the world, and they that dwell therein.”
– “How very different is this from the ignorant Jewish notion of God which prevailed in our Saviour’s day. The Jews said, “The holy land is God’s, and the seed of Abraham are his only people;” but their great Monarch had long before instructed them, – “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.” The whole round world is claimed for Jehovah, “and they that dwell therein” are declared to be his subjects.” – Charles H. Spurgeon
The Berean Study Bible Notes, commenting on Psalm 24:1, observes the following, which should help us to trust the Sovereign LORD more than anyone or anything else.
– “‘The earth is the LORD’s’…emphasizes God’s ownership and sovereignty over all creation. It reflects the biblical worldview that God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, as seen in Genesis 1:1, where God creates the heavens and the earth.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
The LORD Jesus had made it amply clear for us, in the Bible, about Himself and His sovereignty. The problem is not with the communication from our LORD. Rather, the problem is always with us, and our faith in God’s sovereignty.
– “1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1
– “26 For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.” – 1 Corinthians 10:26
– “16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” – Colossians 1:16-17
– “14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.” – Deuteronomy 10:14
Let us not merely make a metal assent to the facts about God. Let us make the knowledge about God real in our hearts and minds. How real is God to us, is seen in the way we approach the struggles, sufferings, storms that appear on our horizon, from time to time. May we never forget that our LORD is the Sovereign who reigns over everything.
"A true recognition of God's sovereignty will avow God’s perfect right to do with us as He wills. The one who bows to the pleasure of the Almighty will acknowledge His absolute right to do with us as seemeth Him good. If He chooses to send poverty, sickness, domestic bereavements, even while the heart is bleeding at every pore, it will say, Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right! Often there will be a struggle, for the carnal mind remains in the believer to the end of his earthly pilgrimage. But though there may be a conflict within his breast, nevertheless, to the one who has really yielded himself to this blessed truth there will presently be heard that Voice saying, as of old it said to the turbulent Gennesaret, "Peace be still"; and the tempestuous flood within will be quieted and the subdued soul will lift a tearful but confident eye to Heaven and say, “Thy will be done."
