The LORD Jesus Christ, the God of all creation and the Redeemer of our souls, not only calls us out of darkness into His marvellous light – 1 Peter 2:9-10, but also provides, protects and helps us to progress in our walk on the Narrow Path. In other words, THE LORD CARES FOR US and is mindful of all what is happening in our lives. Isn’t that a good news of great joy?
The life of prophet Elijah is a very fine example to see the invisible hand of God Almighty, in calling us, caring for us, and comforting us, in the face of wickedness and evil in the highest of places, wanting to kill and destroy the prophet of God.
God calls Elijah to be His prophet – the “Voice” of God – calling His people to repent and return to the LORD their God, at a time when Israel went wantonly after things that abhorred the LORD – around 870 BC. About one hundred years after David’s death, the people of Israel once again plunged themselves into all evil and idolatry, just like they did most of the times in their history.
– “30 Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him. 31 And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him…33…Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.” – 1 Kings 16:30-31,33
Elijah was faithful and obedient to the call of the LORD. Elijah did all what the LORD had asked him to do, at great personal danger. There are times when Elijah ran scared for his life, because the king, the queen and the people who held immense power, wanted to kill Elijah at any cost, for his righteous stand for God.
– “2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” – 1 Kings 19:2-4
God on His part was faithful towards Elijah, His scared servant. God did not scold Elijah, saying “Don’t be a fool.” Instead, God helped calm His servant, and helped Elijah regain his strength and faith.
– “5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.” – 1 Kings 19:5-8
Whatever it may be, that is troubling us this morning. Whatever it may be that is making us scared. Let us never ever forget that, God never abandons His children. He truly cares for us and our welfare. He is always with us. He never leaves us or forsakes us.
– “5…For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13:5b-6
Even so, the LORD help us.
"The experience of Elijah...emphasizes the importance of not succumbing to panic when faced with threats or challenges in life. Instead, we should learn to turn to God in silent prayer and be open to His guidance...Although it is quite human to experience fear and even depression, Scripture reminds us that God is always present in our lives. Let us find courage to turn to God, especially in critical moments, trusting that He will guide and strengthen us."
