The LORD has made it abundantly clear, all through the Bible, about how His “Chosen Children” should live as His ambassadors in this world – all the ones who accept the gracious forgiveness offered by LORD Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and accept Him as their LORD and Saviour. The LORD God Almighty knows that He is calling His people to live a counter-culture life, in a fallen world. A wicked and evil world, fashioned and ruled by Satan, the most evilest of all.
Many have question the reasoning of the Bible’s position on the Christian Way of Life. Many consider the Christian Way of Life is weak and worthless… totally ineffective considering the world, where “MIGHT is RIGHT” is not just the norm, but the law. World is a jungle filled with ruthless, cold, cruel and compassionless people, hence, only the most cold and cruellest power-wielders will rule, and they will surely rule over all who are “weak” and “wobbly” in their hearts and minds.
In such a context the LORD our God, speaking through the apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4 has these inspirational words addressed to all Christians, the Chosen People, who are called out of darkness into His marvellous light – 1 Peter 2:9-10
– ’11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
The apostle Paul lists three crucial points, that are critical for the life to which a Christian is called to.
– THAT YOU ALSO ASPIRE TO LEAD A QUIET LIFE
– TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
– TO WORK WITH YOUR OWN HANDS
Let us see what can we learn from these three points that the LORD is listing through the apostle Paul. As for our meditation today, let us look at the first point – “THAT YOU ALSO ASPIRE TO LEAD A QUIET LIFE.”
1- THAT YOU ALSO ASPIRE TO LEAD A QUIET LIFE
– Firstly, we as Christians and the disciples of the LORD Jesus are called to aspire, desire or want a certain way of life.
– To ASPIRE has in it, the thought of an ambition, a desire or a want for our life.
– According to Strong’s Dictionary, “to aspire” means – “To be zealous, strive eagerly, desire very strongly.”
– Secondly, this life we are called to ASPIRE, is to be lead and lived as a QUIET LIFE – yes, a QUIET LIFE.
– Quiet has the thought of peace, calm, rest and satisfaction deeply embedded in it.
– According to Strong’s Dictionary, “lead a quiet life” means – “make it your ambition to be quiet, and to do your own business.”
Let us pause and ponder over all what we have thought about thus far. Let us look at our lives, and apply the above words to it. In the light of our honest conclusions, let us ask ourselves these questions. How are we going about our lives? What kind of aspirations and ambitions are driving our life? Are they in alignment with what the LORD is asking from us, as His children, and His disciples? Let us seek the LORD to guide our lives, and to help us build it in a way that pleases Him. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The quiet life contradicts the hugely successful modern attraction to entertainment and excitement. This addiction to entertainment and excitement is damaging both spiritually and culturally. We might say that excitement and entertainment are like a religion for many people today."
