Right from the very beginning, the LORD our Creator had been asking us to obey Him. Obedience is the central issue of our walk with the LORD Jesus. Obedience to God is at the very heart of all what our LORD is asking from us.
Let us look at Proverbs 3:1 to see what we can learn from it, for the deeper and clearer understanding of our Christian walk.
– “1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:” – Proverbs 3:1
The LORD is asking us, as His children, His disciples and His ambassadors to do two things. They are absolutely essential for everything else that we would do, as Christians and the followers of the LORD Jesus Christ.
– 1-MY SON, FORGET NOT MY LAW.
– 2-LET THINE HEART KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.
1- MY SON, FORGET NOT MY LAW
– MY SON – The LORD addresses us as His children – “MY SON” and “MY DAUGHTER.” It speaks of the importance that He gives to us. It reveals the heart of God and His intent, more than it reveals our position. It speaks about God’s love for us, and His desire for our welfare.
– FORGET NOT MY LAW – The LORD who created us, has given us His law. We are called not to forget it. This law is what gives us light, and shows the path to us in darkness. We are called to remember the law of the LORD always.
– “97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.” – Psalms 119:97-100
– “do not forget my teaching” – The admonition to “not forget” implies the importance of active remembrance and meditation on God’s Word…This phrase underscores the necessity of internalizing divine wisdom, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:6-9, where the Israelites are instructed to keep God’s commandments on their hearts and teach them diligently to their children. Forgetting God’s teaching can lead to spiritual decline, as illustrated in the history of Israel’s repeated cycles of forgetting and returning to God.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
2- BUT LET THINE HEART KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS
– BUT LET THINE HEART – Heart is the seat of all that we are. All that we desire comes from our hearts. Our hearts are where everything about who we are is. This is why we are called to put our heart in obedience to God and His righteous law.
– KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS – Obedience to the LORD Jesus is the key to everything a Christian thinks, speaks and does. Obedience to our God is at the heart of all our activities. We are called to keep or to OBEY the commands of the LORD. In obedience we see the heart of a Christian, and everything else about him.
– “but let your heart keep my commandments;” – The heart, in biblical terms, is the center of one’s being, encompassing mind, will, and emotions. To “keep” commandments in the heart suggests a deep, internal commitment rather than mere external compliance. This aligns with the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, which calls for loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and strength. The emphasis on the heart also points to the New Covenant promise in Jeremiah 31:33, where God writes His law on the hearts of His people. This foreshadows the work of Christ, who fulfills the law and enables believers to keep God’s commandments through the Holy Spirit.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Here under a few verses from the Bible which give us a deeper and clearer I sight into the OBEDIENCE which are are being called to by our Creator and Redeemer, the LORD Jesus Christ.
– “7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” – Joshua 1:7-8
– “20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” – Proverbs 4:20-22
– “1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. 2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. 3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.” – Proverbs 7:1-3
Dear brothers and sisters, the LORD wants us to REMEMBER His law always; and wants us to KEEP His righteous law with ALL OUR HEARTS. This is the best thing for us to do. Let us therefore, seek the LORD earnestly, and ask Him to help us live for His all the days our lives. Even so, the LORD help us.
"Deciding to not forget God’s word is more than a mental exercise of memory. It is also connected to a life of obedience, in which one does keep the commands of God. If one mentally remembers God’s word yet fails to obey it, we could rightly say he or she has forgotten God’s commands."
