Man of the world thinks that all that he has, is the result of human effort and personal hard work. However, the Bible tells us clearly that “Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders build in vain…” – Psalm 127:1-2. Though human effort is required for a good and fruitful life, but to say, everything we have is the result of only human effort is a grossly wrong understanding about life, and how it works.
The Word of God tells us that our life is a gift of God.
– The LORD Jesus, unless He graciously lays His hand of blessing upon our lives and upon all our works, we would not see any progress, and it would not prosper.
– On a deeper level of understanding God, man and how things work in this world, we realise that every gift, every talent, every skill, all the knowledge, understanding and intelligence that we possess is a gift given to us graciously by God.
– On a tangible level of understanding life, we should realise that our time, our health, our opportunities, our talents and extension of our life itself, day upon day, is in fact, a gracious gift of God Almighty, the LORD Jesus Christ.
Let us see some words of the LORD, as recorded for us by His mouthpieces, the human agents, for our edification, our benefit and our blessing.
– “27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.” – John 3:27
– “16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” – James 1:16-17
– “12 Both riches and honour come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all. 13 “Now therefore, our God, We thank You And praise Your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and who are my people, That we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, And of Your own we have given You.” – 1 Chronicles 29:12-14
– “10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” – 1 Peter 4:10
Now if human life is thus, then how should we be living our lives? There is no room for boasting in human ability. There is no room for human pride. God is over all and above all. It is by His grace and mercy that we have what we have. The very life we have; the sunrise after sunrise that we see, is nothing but a gift of God to all human beings…Christ obedient or not.
– May we always be GRATEFUL and THANKFUL to God for His grace and mercy towards us.
– May we always be FAITHFUL and OBEDIENT to the LORD Jesus.
– May we always be DOERS of the WORD, and not merely hearers only.
Even so, the LORD help us.
"Christians [must] recognize that everything we have is a gift. God has given us everything—life, salvation, and everything that makes up life in this world and the next. Every day, every moment, should be filled with thanksgiving. God is good, and everything He does and gives is for our good. It is all a gift."
