The LORD Jesus’ anger is seen in the two events that are traditionally listed for Monday, in the Passion Week. Some traditions may have a slightly different sequence of events. It is alright.
The two events are – the LORD curses the fig tree in the morning, on His way to Jerusalem. Upon His arrival at the temple in Jerusalem, He chases the money changers and the hawkers, out of the Temple.
What a dramatic change of events from the Triumphal Entry of the true and rightful King into the chosen City of Jerusalem. The LORD visibly demonstrates His displeasure. The fig tree with leaves should have had fruit – the figs. The tree had all the signs of life and growth, but the fruit was missing. The very thing for which a tree grows is missing. What a tragedy!
As if to demonstrate to us, the LORD drives away peddlers and profiteers, who have all the paraphernalia of a child of God, yet, misses the most important thing of all – the fruit in their lives.
No wonder the LORD taught, “16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn-bushes or figs from thistles?” “35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” – Matthew 7:16, 12:35.
Now the question to us, beginning with me – where are our fruits?
"The one thing He commands us as His branches is to bear fruit. Let us live to bless others, to testify of the life and the love there is in Jesus. Let us in faith and obedience give our whole life to that which Jesus chose us for and appointed us to-fruit-bearing."
