What a joy it is to read Psalms from the Bible!!! The book of Psalms is a, treasure trove of praise and worship. David, one of the major contributors to the book of Psalms, has unending reasons to praise God, His Creator and His LORD. May we learn from David, what is it to praise our LORD, and how and the why of it.
We see in Psalm 34, David giving us, plenty of reasons for, why one should praise God. The title of the Psalm has this description – “The Happiness of Those Who Trust in God A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.” In the face of problems and imminent danger, and death itself, David sings these words of praise…
– “1 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.” – Psalm 34:1-3
What kind of a heart should it be, that sings these words? Verse one sets the tone and tenor for the entire Psalm. *It gives us a glimpse into the heart of David, and his approach and attitude towards life, its struggles, and above all, the LORD, His God, in whom David trusts.* No wonder David begins by saying…
– “1 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Please, let us note the choice of words, that David uses here.
– I WILL BLESS THE LORD – It is a decision, and a determined decision at that.
– AT ALL TIMES – Whether the things are going well, or not so well. Whether times are good, or bad. Whatever may be happening, in and around us…at all times!!!
– HIS PRAISE – The praise is of God, and God alone.
– SHALL CONTINUALLY BE IN MY MOUTH – An intentional, clear, definite and determined decision…a never ending, intentional, determined and continual praise.
What should be our attitude towards God, when we are the beneficiaries of such love, forgiveness, goodness, mercy and grace? The lesson for us is this – God’s praise should be on our lips, continually. Unceasing praise of God, for His goodness and grace, bestowed upon us and our lives, unmerited by every measure. Nothing but praise, should continually be in our lips…nothing except praise. Even so the LORD help us.
"To bless the Lord is never unseasonable. "His praise shall continually be in my mouth," not in my heart merely, but in my mouth too. Our thankfulness is not to be a dumb thing...Our tongue...it ought to reveal the glory of God."
