The Psalm 72 is speaking to the king, about the righteousness and justice, that needs to be aspired and upheld, by those in authority, towards the weak, the marginalised and the oppressed. However when we look at it closely, we see that it talking about the Messiah and YAHWEH Himself.
The Psalm is talking about the LORD, the Redeemer, and the Restorer of, all that is lost and destroyed, because of our sin and rebellion – “17 His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed. 18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! 19 And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.”
The cross of Calvary is a very fine example of God’s restorative justice and righteousness. In all that Jesus Christ of Nazareth achieved, never was the law of the LORD diluted or compromised. God chose to pay, the full price for our redemption, by His own blood. This made the stony human heart to be transformed, and the blessings of God to flow upon us.
Jessica Nicholas, writing in her book, “God Loves Justice: A User-Friendly Guide to Biblical Justice and Righteousness” says – “God’s justice is higher than merely punishing someone who has committed an injustice – He desires to restore everything that was lost.”
The lessons for us, from Psalm 72…
1- Justice and righteousness are close to God’s heart. It is part of His character – it is WHO HE IS.
2- Restorative justice and righteousness are part of God’s dealing with the fallen human beings.
3- God does not compromise His righteous and just law, for the sake of restoration. They both are perfectly balanced, without compromising either of them.
4- God wants us, His disciples, His children, His chosen people…the Christians…to walk in the path that, He has shown us. This is what is called “To be like Jesus.”
"Instead of using His righteousness as an excuse to distance Himself from people, God’s righteousness means that He comes so close that He can save His people."
