David has so much to speak to us, even today, a good 3000 years ago. The Bible records this in 2 Samuel 22:1 – “1 Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.” This song is reflected in Psalm 18:1–50 – a song of “Praise for God’s Deliverance.”
Life of David has everything in it. A shepherd boy, who was considered least among his siblings, becomes the giant slayer and the king of Israel. He is chased by his enemies and was betrayed by people. He fell from grace because of his sin. Yet, he chose to confess and seek forgiveness than to proudly and egotistically throw around his weight. No wonder David is called, “A man after God’s own heart” – Acts 13:22.
These are his words of David – “2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. 4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.” – 2 Samuel 22:2-4
In the midst of peace and storms, David always made God his refuge, and to Him he ran, every time he felt insecure and troubled. He desired YAHWEH with all his heart, and His glory, more than anything else, in his life – “4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” “10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” – Psalms 27:4, 84:10.
May we like David, sing songs of praises to our God, and desire the LORD, and Him alone, all the days of our lives. So God help us.
""Such convictions – of the absolute sovereignty of Jehovah, of His omnipotent power to deliver, of the necessity for obedience to His law, and of assurance that in the case of such obedience He ever acts for His people – constituted the underlying strength of David’s character."
