David’s life is an amazing journey. It is like a ‘dream’ to see his meteoric rise from being a simple shepherd boy, to the greatest king ever to rule Israel. He comes out as an unpretentious person, in spite of all his talents and his abilities. He simply did not forget his humble roots, nor his low estate, when he became the most powerful person in the land. He displayed goodness and grace even to those who were not so good to him.
It is interesting to know that, more has been written about David than any other person in the Bible. A total of sixty-six chapters are dedicated to him. This does not include the fifty-nine references to him in the New Testament. Isn’t that amazing for a humble shepherd boy turned king?
Now what can we learn from this amazing man? There is much to learn from the life of David. Here is a short list of traits or qualities, that we can learn, which are much needed for us today.
1- David loved God more than anyone and anything.
2- He desired to live for God no matter the cost.
3- He was faithful to his word.
4- He was courageous to stand up for what is right.
5- He repented and confessed his failures, mistakes and sins immediately, when required, even publicly, though it meant personally, a loss of face.
6- He loved, cared and valued people, and was concerned about their welfare.
7- He was definite and decisive in his decisions and actions.
David was human in every sense of the word, yet he rose to extraordinary heights of integrity, honesty and transparency. What a life! It is sure is worth emulating.
