Continuing our “Train of Thought” let us see what Joshua 1:8 has to teach us. The LORD, is speaking his heart with a young man, who is about to embark on a responsibility of his lifetime. God had already, in verse 6, encouraged Joshua, not to be afraid. We see the LORD speaking clearly to Joshua, in verse 7, to do all what the law of the LORD commands…all which Moses, the LORD’s servant, had already instructed him.
Further elaborating on verse 7, the LORD God Almighty, explains to the young leader, the key to the successful accomplishment of all the responsibilities entrusted to him, in verse 8. It is in knowing the heart of God, and following through with what one learns from the Word of God, that we will have enduring success. Herein is the key for our life and its success.
– “8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8
Even a cursory glance at the verse above, would enable us to see three things, clearly pointed out.
– “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth”
– “but you shall meditate in it day and night”
– “that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it”
When Joshua, and the rest of us, do the above three things, the following result would be the natural and automatic result. Watch the words…
– “For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
There is nothing unclear or hazy, about what the LORD is asking Joshua, in verse 8. It is self-explanatory, isn’t it?
Jen Wilkin explains, why one must read the Bible. It helps us to see, what the LORD is wanting Joshua to get, and us too, even this day…
– “We must make a study of our God: what He loves, what He hates, how He speaks and acts. We cannot imitate a God whose features and habits we have never learned. We must make a study of Him if we want to become like Him. We must seek His face.”
Simply put, WANT TO KNOW GOD – PLEASE STUDY THE BIBLE
A. W. Tozer, one of the faithful servants of God, has these insightful words about, why one should read the Word of God.
– “The Word of God well understood and religiously obeyed is the shortest route to spiritual perfection. And we must not select a few favourite passages to the exclusion of others. Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian.”
BIBLE – THE BEST ROAD TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND MATURITY
The LORD wanted Joshua to read the law of the LORD, and meditate upon it wholeheartedly, day and night, so that he would know, who the LORD God is, know the heart of God, His will, His wisdom, and the clarity needed, to carry on with the responsibilities entrusted to him. All very critical components, for a disciple of, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Most Christians make this cardinal mistake, of superficially reading the Bible – just skimming through the favourite parts – some may just read all the amazing promises of God, day and night, in the hope that LORD would honour every single one of them. When we tread such a path in regards to the word of God, it will result in our stunted growth, spiritual imbalance, and prone to erroneous winds. Not a desirable situation, for a serious disciple of the LORD.
May the LORD help us to be, steady and serious students of the Word of God. May we take time, to meditate upon it, day and night. May we determinedly commit ourselves to fully obeying the LORD, uncompromisingly and gladly. Even so the LORD help us.
"God wants to communicate with you in the 21st century. He wrote His message in a book. He asks you to come and study that book for three compelling reasons: it is essential for growth; it is essential for maturity; it is essential for equipping you, training you, so that you might be an available, clean, sharp instrument in His hands to accomplish His purposes. So the real question confronting you now is: How can you afford not to be in God’s Word?"
