Parents are just as human as anyone else. Many times, as children, we tend to forget this simple fact. We do so because, we see them through different lenses, which we have grown up with.
Parents are just as flawed as anyone of us are. They have their shortcomings and their failures. It is good for us, as their children, to ignore the flaws of our parents if any. It is something that we have to train our minds to do intentionally, and condition ourselves, to think on those lines.
Parents deserve our love and affection. They need to see and feel, our demonstrable care and concern. This, in spite of their flaws, if any. Is this not, what love is…the love which the LORD Jesus demonstrated, on the cross of Calvary, for you and me…the underserving enemies of God? This is what the Word of God says – “6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” “10…when we were enemies [of God] we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son…” – Romans 5:6-8; Romans 5:10a
Gail Burton Purath makes a serious observation, in regards to, how we as Christians, are treating our parents today – “There is a serious problem in the body of Christ. A growing number of adult children are ungrateful, critical, and disrespectful toward their Christian and non-Christian parents. They are magnifying their parents’ faults and minimizing their parents’ sacrifices and love. They expect grace from their parents, but give very little in return. Unfortunately, many in the church are sympathising with these fault-finders in direct contradiction to God’s Word.”
Let us love and care for our parents, in an demonstrable way, just as Christ loved us. This is what it means to be a Christian, isn’t it?
