The book of 2 Samuel chapter 23 records the last words of king David. It gives us a glimpse of his heart, his attitude and his faith and trust in God His LORD. It helps us understand what made David so great as a man, a friend, a leader and a king. David was thirty years old when he became the king, and he reigned for forty years – 2 Samuel 5,4.
For our meditation today, let us see 2 Samuel 23:1, which is an introduction of David – “1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse…the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel…”
– Son of Jesse – It not only tells us about his father, but also his family and their occupation. Jesse was a farmer and a simple man. David’s upbringing was that of a simple, hardworking farming family.
– The Man Who was Raised Up on High – This confirms the humble roots of David. Their family was not with some great and recognised family history. Yet, they were not short on values, ethics and principles.
– The Anointed of the God of Jacob – This singular point distinguishes David from not only his siblings and his family, but also all the others in Judah and Israel. He was chosen by God to be His representative, His voice and His man, who would carry-out His will. David was chosen because of his heart towards God – the Lord “sought out a man after his own heart” – 1 Samuel 13:14; 15:28; 16:7.
–The Sweet Psalmist of Israel – This recognises David as a poet who wrote some of the best loves psalms in the Bible. He was an artist of a very high calibre. David was a multi-talented person.
May the LORD raise many more people like David in our generation for His glory, and the blessing of His people – leaders who would uncompromisingly stand for God, and poets who would inspire others to worship God in all integrity and sincerity.
"David’s heart for God prepares him to be used by God. Our impressive resumes aren’t what make us useful in God’s kingdom. The first lesson we learn from David’s life is the importance of cultivating a heart for God above all else."
