David is, undoubtedly a great leader, and the greatest king ever, because of multiple reasons. He displays fearless and unmatched courage, in the face of problems much much bigger than him and his stature. He displays unmistakable clarity of thought, and influences and inspires, many mighty men of valour, to follow him. Today we will see another of David’s traits, which made him what he is.
2 Samuel 23:5 speaks about David’s heart and his attitude towards everything in his life. He demonstrates such humility, honesty, truthfulness and transparency – a rare trait in men of war – “5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.”
David honestly acknowledges that his house is not in order, as it should be. He confesses that his leadership was not as great as it is supposed to be. This statement is in direct relation with 2 Samuel 23:4, where the LORD tells David, how a leader should be.
Continuing the same train of thought, David recognises with a grateful heart that, the covenant which God made with David, is based on God’s faithfulness, and thankfully not on David. This means that, the faults and failures of David would not destroy the covenant. For this, David was forever grateful to God.
What honesty and what humility in making such a confession. It takes real courage to bare oneself so openly. No wonder he is called “a man after God’s own heart.” May the LORD raise many more leaders like David.
"David knew that the everlasting covenant from God was not based on David’s perfection as a ruler. It was based on God’s gracious commitment to His everlasting covenant."
